price the stripped out lowest tier much lower than the competition, then cite how much more expensive the competition is… even though to get the same capabilities, you must buy the (usually) more expensive higher tier product. On an aside: this is the same deceptive pricing scheme that maya and XSI are using as well. really, if you have both right now, learn both, and take two weeks or a month to see which one fits your production best. So, knowing that there is only a $65 difference in packages, choose the app that works best in your pipeline for your needs. 'tis not the huge price difference that people keep citing. we are talking about a $65 difference in price. i just checked the price of Max, and it is retailing for $3055. now the Studio bundle, roughly analogous* to what you get out of the single tier of Max is $2995. the lowest you want to go is the $1995 XL bundle. pretty good price, but extremely stripped. Now, people keep bringing up the price difference- so, i’ll list some prices as of 2:53 pm -6 gmt friday september 23, 2005:

Oh yeah, thats one more pro i forgot to list for C4D- cross platform. plus, TP and Pyrocluster are wonderfuly integrated. they are fast, and effecient, and if you are doing alot of motion GFX, i would say its faster than Max. That said- the pros of C4D are in its nurbs modeling tools. My biggest hurdle to liking C4D, however is the lack of tools that i th ink would be standard to any 3d program- such as aligning objects, basic spline editing tools, and a keyframe setup that was easy to use. and navigate you must, as selecting objects in a scene is not done in the viewport, but in the object manager window. now, this creates a faster workflow, but pretty soon, you can get some pretty insane hierarchy trees going, which become a nightmare to navigate.

basically, it is different enough from other software i’ve used (Max, Maya, Silo,) that i had to activly unlearn habbits in order to pick up on how C4D works.įor instance: C4D uses heirarchical linking for most everything… want to add a modifier, you create a modifier, then link the object to it. Now, i’ve heard nothing but how easy C4D is to learn, but this has not been my experience. since then, i have installed a sweet Boxx system and a seat of Max, so i’ve hardly found time to go back and finish learning C4D. so, i sat down and trained myself on it with the provided tutorials. unfortunately, no-one in house knew how to use it.

I’m a long time Max user, who recently moved to a job which allready had a liscense of C4D. not to start a app war or a flame, this is just my personal experience.
